Bidders’ meeting for Pakistan’s Liquefied Natural Gas import projects held in London

Islamabad, December 14, 2012 (PPI-OT): The Bidders’ Meeting for Pakistan’s integrated LNG import project took place on Friday 14th December in London. This is the first of the planned LNG import projects and will provide for a 15 years supply of gas at an average rate of 400 MMCFD.

The Adviser to the Prime Minister on Petroleum and Natural Resources Dr Asim Hussain while addressing the meeting, said that a total of 18 companies have expressed interest in the project including a number of major international LNG players together with their Pakistani partners.

The Minister outlined the key role that LNG imports will play in addressing the widening energy supply gap and how the Government of Pakistan would provide direct support to the project through the provision of sovereign guarantees and the facilitation of approvals and consents required by the project developers.

Dr Asim Hussain also noted that SSGC had been mandated to purchase the LNG which would go mainly into meeting the country’s power generation needs, and that an international LNG adviser (QED Consulting) had been retained to provide both the expertise required and also to ensure a fair and transparent tendering / procurement process.

During the meeting, Consultants provided an overview of the tender process and the draft long term gas sales agreement, with the objective of bringing LNG into Pakistan within 2 years of signing this agreement. At the end of the meeting, an extended question and answer session was conducted, where the bidders had the opportunity to express their views and points for clarification. Bids / Proposals are due early in 2013.
