Srinagar, The body of a sledgeman, who went missing following the collapse of the Thajwas Glacier, was recovered from the Sindh River near Ganderbal area of Sonamarg in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir on Monday morning, officials confirmed.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the incident occurred on Sunday when a portion of the glacier unexpectedly gave way. The sledgeman, along with two tourists, was near the glacier at the time. While the tourists were rescued shortly after the collapse, the sledgeman was swept into the Sindh River, prompting an immediate search and rescue operation.
Local officials stated that the recovery effort for the missing sledgeman began swiftly after the accident. The Thajwas Glacier, a popular tourist spot in Sonamarg, became the site of tragedy when it partially collapsed, trapping the local sledgeman and two tourists.
The incident has raised concerns about safety measures at the glacier, frequented by tourists and locals alike. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances that led to the glacier’s partial collapse to prevent future incidents.
