Raipur: The Chhattisgarh government has banned the Adivasi organization Moolvasi Bachao Manch (MBM) for one year under the Chhattisgarh Special Public Security Act, 2005. The decision has sparked criticism from activists and civil society groups.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the ban, which was imposed on October 30, has been condemned by activists who argue that the government is suppressing dissenting voices. They assert that MBM has been a peaceful platform advocating for the rights of Adivasis. Sociologist and activist Nandini Sundar noted that MBM has called for genuine development initiatives such as schools and healthcare facilities instead of focusing on security camps.
Human rights activist Soni Sori also criticized the government’s decision, highlighting the failure to address grievances of the Adivasi community. The MBM was formed in response to the 2021 Silger firing incident, where four Adivasis were killed during protests against a security camp. Since its inception, the organization has conducted over 30 demonstrations.
The ban has intensified the debate over the government’s approach to handling dissent and addressing issues faced by Adivasis in the region. Activists are calling for the revocation of the ban and urging the government to engage in open dialogue with the affected communities.
