Chief Minister Sindh for Efficient Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management Plan

Karachi, February 19, 2015 (PPI-OT): The Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah has stressed upon the technical experts academia, business community and civil society to contribute their valuable and experienced suggestions in devising an efficient Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management Plan and its implementation to ensue neat, clean and pollution free environment for the society.

This he observed while addressing one day multi stake holders consultation seminar on Karachi Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management Plan organized by Sindh Solid Waste Management in collaboration with Karachi metropolitan corporation (KMC) and Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FPCCI) at FPCCI Headquarter.

Addressing the Seminar, the Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah said that the enormous population growth especially in urban areas like Karachi, poses a great challenged not only to present waste management system but environment as well.

He said that Govt of Sindh, realizing the growing threat to the environment and general health of the citizen, established the Sindh solid waste management board (SSWMB) through an act in 2013 to devise and pursue new strategies for all components of waste generated in entire Sindh not only to have our cities neat and clean but to ensure healthy environment and reduce the health bill of the people.

Subsequently SSWMB has chalked out a comprehensive plan and it has placed before the Technical experts, Academia, business community civil society and even NGO for their valuable input he added and said that this Multi-stake holder consultation seminar provides an opportunity and framework of ideas to adopt the culture of neat and clean city and human environment by installing environmentally efficient production unit.

He said that he was optimist that the civil society business community to join the Govt in making bold decision for the sake of clean environment and also to adjust production process and living styles habits to minimize environmental damage and reduce the waste generation.

The Chief Minister Sindh said that in order to concentrate fully on the projects the implementation on the Municipal Solid Waste Management plan has been schedule in three phases to achieved better result at the satisfaction of all stake holders. While responding the complain presented by CEO Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) Mr. SM Muneer, the Chief Minister Sindh assured the businessmen that their problem about shortage of water will shortly be resolved.

The MD solid waste management Board Roshan Shaikh, talking on the occasion said that in 1st phase this plan will be implemented in Karachi, Hyderabad and Shaheed Benazirabad while 10 other district will be taken into hand in second phase and remaining all district are included in 3rd phase of the implementation plan.

CEO of TDAP Mr. SM Muneer in his speech termed this plan as important one and said that indiscriminative dumping of garbage especially on open plots / space has created health hazards for the people. However he maintains that by placing this plan, the gap between capacity of municipal bodies and generated garbage will be full filled. He also suggested for availing waste energy option not only to keep the city clean but earn the revenue from power generation as well.
