Mehbooba Mufti Calls for Unity in Jammu and Kashmir to Protect Regional Identity

Jammu, Mehbooba Mufti, President of the Peoples Democratic Party, has called on the residents of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir to unite and resist the federal policies implemented since August 5, 2019, which revoked the region’s special status. Mufti emphasized the collective determination of the local population to preserve their distinct cultural and political identity.

According to Kashmir Media Service, during a speech in the Budhal area of Rajouri, Mufti voiced the widespread discontent across diverse community groups with the actions of the Modi government, which she described as a direct assault on the region’s autonomy and resources. She highlighted the impact of these changes not only on the Muslim majority but also on the Dogra community of Jammu, who she said are also suffering from the loss of control over local resources.

Mufti criticized the Indian administration’s suppression of dissent, particularly its use of the Public Safety Act against young people protesting various grievances. She described the prevailing silence in the region as akin to a “graveyard,” enforced to mask the dissatisfaction and unrest among its people. Concluding her address, Mufti urged the residents to actively defend their rights and identity, stating, “This is our land, and we will protect our identity at all costs.â€
