Lucknow, July 09, 2023 (PPI-OT): A Dalit man was assaulted and forced to lick the shoes by an upper-caste Hindu in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The incident took place Sonbhadra district of the state on Thursday and its videos went viral on social media today (Saturday).
In one of the videos, the upper-caste Hindu, a contractual electricity worker, is seen brutally assaulting and abusing the Dalit man, 21, and asking the person shooting the video to share it “in a group”. In the second video, the Dalit man is seen licking the shoes of the worker and doing sit-ups while holding his ears and apologising. The police have lodged a case at Shahganj police station in the district against the accused, identified as Tejbali Singh Patel, who is a contractual lineman in the Shahganj area of Sonbhadra district. The case was lodged after the alit Man Rajendra Chamar filed a complaint at the Shahganj police station and Patel was arrested.
Chamar told the reporters that he had gone to his uncle’s house. “There was some issue with the power wire, and I was looking at it. Tejbali reached there and started assaulting me with sticks. He also made me spit on his shoes and lick it. For two days, I didn’t say anything. But now, I have come to lodge a case,” he said.
The case against Patel has been lodged under various sections of Indian Penal Code and the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The incident took place just days after a video showing a BJP worker urinating on a labourer from a tribal community in Madhya Pradesh’s Sidhi district went viral on social media.
