Washington: Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai, Chairman of the World Forum for Peace and Justice, has praised Amnesty International for its recent report on India’s human rights abuses, particularly in Kashmir, calling it a timely and necessary assessment of the situation.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the report, released on October 21, 2024, criticizes India’s failure to uphold its obligations under international treaties, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). It also aligns with previous findings from UN human rights bodies concerning India’s conduct in the Kashmir region.
Dr. Fai, in a statement from Washington, stressed that the report sheds light on the severe human rights violations occurring in Kashmir, urging global recognition and action. He highlighted Amnesty’s findings regarding India’s lack of progress in implementing recommendations from the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process, noting that India has routinely relied on repressive laws, such as the Armed Forces (Jammu and Kashmir) Special Powers Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, to stifle free speech and assembly.
He further noted that the situation in Kashmir has worsened since the Indian government revoked Article 370 on August 5, 2019, stripping the region of its special status. This decision, Dr. Fai emphasized, has led to increased restrictions on freedoms and rights, with some human rights experts warning of the risk of potential genocide.
The Amnesty report also highlights India’s refusal to engage meaningfully with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), underscoring the urgent need for international action to address ongoing violations.
Dr. Fai concluded by calling for immediate global intervention to stop human rights abuses in Kashmir and to work towards resolving the long-standing conflict, which he believes is crucial for ensuring peace and stability in South Asia.
