Energy Tariff Hike Sparks Industry Concerns

Karachi: Faisal Moiz Khan, President of the North Karachi Association of Trade and Industry (NKATI), has criticized proposed increases in gas and electricity tariffs, describing them as activities that could harm the industrial sector.

Khan noted that a hearing is scheduled to discuss Sui Southern Gas Company’s request to raise the gas price by Rs. 125.41 per MMBTU, reaching an average of Rs. 1,658.56 per MMBTU. He argued that such increases are ill-timed, given the current economic conditions, and expressed hope that the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) will prioritize alleviating the industry’s challenges.

The NKATI President highlighted that increases in tariffs could negatively affect government-led economic initiatives. He pointed out potential inequalities arising from the government’s three-year electricity incremental package for the industrial sector. To support industries, he recommended reducing the basic tariff universally, urging the bureaucracy to refrain from experimenting with new measures and focus on tariff reduction.
