Karachi: Acting Chairman of the Employees Old Age Benefit Institution (EOBI), Javed A. Shaikh, announced plans to reinstate a help desk within the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) and address pressing contribution issues. The announcement was made during a luncheon event hosted by KATI, where industry leaders discussed solutions for unregistered industries and overdue payments.
According to North Karachi Association of Trade and Industry, Javed A. Shaikh emphasized the importance of collaboration with KATI to resolve ongoing concerns. He confirmed that EOBI will not take action regarding industry issues, such as notices and attachments, without consulting KATI, highlighting the longstanding relationship between the two organizations. Javed A. Shaikh also mentioned the substantial pension payouts made by EOBI, totaling over 5 billion rupees monthly, supported solely by contributions from registered institutions.
KATI President Junaid Naqi raised concerns about EOBI’s practice of separate office registrations, which complicates compliance for small and medium enterprises. Naqi called for a return to cooperative relations between EOBI and KATI, proposing a policy that balances the interests of all parties involved. He also noted the unauthorized issuance of notices for old dues, urging a resolution through consultation.
Deputy Patron-in-Chief Zubair Chhaya commended Javed A. Shaikh for his comprehensive understanding of EOBI’s challenges, stressing the need for improved officer conduct and a focus on unregistered industries. Chhaya and other industry leaders highlighted the economic difficulties faced by businesses, advocating for measures to ease the contribution burden on SMEs.
CEO of Kite Limited, Zahid Saeed, recalled the benefits of a previous EOBI focal point within KATI, supporting its reinstatement to manage industry issues more effectively. Saeed suggested legislative changes to prevent multiple industry registrations and urged the inclusion of KATI in agreements before industry actions are taken.
The event underscored the shared goal of enhancing industry cooperation with EOBI to facilitate smoother operations and improved outcomes for employees and employers alike.
