Family, community come together to help Lucknow women protest against CAA, NRC

Lucknow, January 21, 2020 (PPI-OT): The protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) at Lucknow’s Ghanta Ghar has turned into another Shaheen Bagh. The Ghanta Ghar protest continued for the fourth consecutive day on Monday where hundreds of women gathered with placards, posters and banners.

Heena, a resident of Raqabganj area is a part of peaceful protest at Ghanta Ghar and has been attending daily. She comes to the protest site every morning after sending her children to school. Speaking to India Today TV, she said “My father, mother-in-law and husband have shared my household work since the anti-CAA protest started at Ghanta Ghar. Since Friday, I have been going back home late in the night and coming back in the morning after sending my children to school.”

Heena added, “My family members take care of my kids so that I can come here to raise my protest against the CAA which is discriminatory and divisive. The police have also locked toilets so that we face inconvenience but we will continue to sit here.”

Another woman Tabassum who came from the Daliganj area said “I live with my two children. I am a divorcee. After sending them to school, I come here to protest from morning till late evening. My relatives and neighbours take care of my children until I don’t reach home.”

“The government is clearly doing politics of polarisation by refusing citizenship to the Muslims under the CAA. By implementing NPR, the government wants us to stand in the queue with our papers to prove nationality. It is being done strategically by the government to target the Muslims,” she said.

Uroosa Rana who lives in Lalbagh said “Different versions on the NRC have been given by BJP leaders. We don’t believe the government when it says that NRC is not on their agenda. It will also be implemented to target Muslims. Our protest will continue till the government doesn’t withdraw CAA and assure us that NRC will not be implemented.” “It’s difficult to manage family and protest together but we are left with no other option but to raise our voice,” said Rana.
