Islamabad: The cause of women empowerment has got a tremendous impetus with the assent of two landmark bills given by President Asif Ali Zardari. The President’s signing Criminal Law (Third Amendment) Bill 2010 and the Criminal Law (Second Amendment) Bill 2011 into law constitute a watershed in the women struggle for emancipation and empowerment. The democratic government can rightly take pride on these achievements.
These views were expressed by Syeda Fiza Batool Gilani, Honorary Goodwill Ambassador for Women Empowerment, in a statement issued here today. She also congratulated the nation and the members of Parliament on the passage of the National Commission on Human Rights Bill by the National Assembly. She said that the Bill would put in place an institutional mechanism to address the human rights violations. She added that the Bill, which was pending since 1993, was passed by the present Parliament, which speaks volumes about the commitment of democracy towards improving the lot of womenfolk.
Fiza Gilani said that these legislative measures were in line with the vision of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and manifesto of Pakistan People’s Party. She also paid a glowing tribute to political leadership across the party divide that rose to the occasion and took up important pro-women legislation.
Fiza Gilani said that empowerment of women was a long drawn out struggle and the government would not rest on its laurels in this regard. She said that there was a need to stay the course. She also impressed upon women rights groups and media to play their role in sensitizing the women and society at large about the fruits of these legislative measures. She said that these laws were the gift of the democratic government to the women on the National Day of Working Women.
