Foreign Minister Khar convenes meeting on Generalized System of Preferences plus Scheme

Islamabad, November 29, 2012 (PPI-OT): Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, convened a meeting this morning in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to review the status of implementation of requirements for Pakistan to participate in European Union’s Generalized System of Preferences plus Scheme, which grants preferential treatment to the exporters of developing countries to the EU countries.

The meeting was attended by Advisor to the Prime Minister for Human Rights Mr. Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, Spokesman to the President Mr. Farhatullah Babar, Secretary Commerce Mr. Munir Qureshi and senior officers from the Law and Interior Ministries. Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani also attended the meeting.

Pakistan is seeking to benefit from the GSP Plus scheme in order to provide a boost to Pakistan’s exports to the European Union. The scheme will become effective from 1st January 2014.

Today’s meeting was intended to mobilize all stakeholders to help meet the criteria and requirements for Pakistan’s participation in GSP plus scheme. This is part of the endeavors of the democratic government to increase Pakistan’s trade with the European Union and thus expand opportunities for Pakistan’s industry.

The meeting decided to meet regularly to facilitate fulfilment of the requirements for GSP plus scheme, particularly the ratification and implementation of UN Conventions relating to human rights, good governance, and environment.
