Karachi: Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturers Association (PVMA) Chairman Sheikh Umer Rehan has raised alarm over the ongoing strike by goods transporters, highlighting its potential to significantly disrupt the national economy. The strike, he said, is already affecting the supply of edible oil, ghee, and industrial raw materials, leading to the shutdown of several industries.
Sheikh Umer Rehan expressed concern that frequent strikes are undermining economic stability and called for urgent government intervention. The supply chain of essential commodities has been severely impacted, with transportation of critical industrial raw materials coming to a standstill. This has forced industries to halt operations, exacerbating the situation further.
He urged the government to address the transporters’ genuine demands while taking a firm stance against those exploiting the situation for personal gain. Rehan emphasized that any actions harming economic activity should not be tolerated.
The PVMA Chairman warned that continued suspension of raw material supplies could cripple the production process, with dire consequences for the economy. The halt in the delivery of imported goods has resulted in consignments being stuck at ports, exposing businesses to financial losses from demurrage and detention charges.
Rehan noted that the prolonged transportation disruption is increasing the likelihood of factory closures. He appealed to the government to implement measures to resolve industrial issues, particularly to restore the transportation of goods for vanaspati manufacturers, ensuring the timely supply of essential commodities to the public.
