Heavy Rains in North and Northwest India Claim 28 Lives

New Delhi: A severe weather event struck north and northwest India, leading to the deaths of at least 28 people due to rain-related incidents on Sunday. The region experienced landslides, extensive traffic disruptions, structural collapses, and a significant dam breach in Haryana, which resulted in the inundation of several villages.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the torrential rains, marking the second consecutive day of downpours, have severely affected the area with Rajasthan experiencing the majority of casualties. The state reported 16 deaths across the weekend, including 14 on Sunday alone, with Karauli district witnessing exceptionally heavy rainfall reaching 38 cm. Additionally, in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur, nine people perished when their vehicle was swept away by a swollen rivulet, including eight from one family.

The deluge also impacted central, south, southwest, and east Delhi, causing significant waterlogging and subsequent traffic chaos on multiple roadways. A tragic incident in a waterlogged park in Rohini’s Sector 20 resulted in the drowning of a seven-year-old boy on Saturday evening. Local authorities reported multiple disruptions and emergency calls related to waterlogging and fallen trees, particularly affecting areas around Najafgarh-Phirni road near Dhansa stand and Bahadurgarh stand.
