Historian highlights dangers to Indian democracy from majoritarian rule

New Delhi, Prominent historian Aishwary Kumar has issued a stark warning about the threats to Indian democracy, highlighting the “tyrannical impulses of the majority” rather than the actions of minorities.

According to Kashmir Media Service, in a recent media interview, Kumar pointed out the increasing influence of the Hindu right and the majoritarian manipulation of constitutional and democratic frameworks. This shift, he noted, has fueled a widespread indifference to violations against Muslims and other minorities. Kumar emphasized that the true spirit of democracy is under siege by a form of tyranny that is deeply rooted in caste dynamics and sustained by the numerical dominance of the majority.

He advocated for a reevaluation of democratic principles based on the teachings of Ambedkar, who warned about the dangers of democracy without a conscientious democratic majority. Additionally, Kumar highlighted the critical link between democracy and constitutionalism, cautioning against the potential misuse of the Constitution to further right-wing agendas.

Describing India’s current political climate as a “neo-democratic condition,” Kumar criticized the reshaping of democracy to favor majoritarian desires over the essential rights and freedoms of individuals. He called for a reorientation of focus towards the majority’s role in perpetuating political violence and oppression.
