Srinagar: Iltija Mufti, the daughter of People’s Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti, claimed her phone was hacked by the Pegasus spyware, an allegation that points to the Indian government’s procurement of the technology from Israel to target critics and political opponents in Jammu and Kashmir.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Iltija disclosed the hack in a social media post on X. She received an alert from Apple that her phone was compromised by Pegasus, a tool she accuses the Government of India of using to “harass critics and political opponents.”
Iltija also criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for its treatment of women leaders who challenge its policies. She questioned the depths of the party’s tactics, particularly highlighting the invasive surveillance she believes is deployed against those who oppose them.
The Pegasus spyware, crafted by Israeli firm NSO Group, is known for its capability to infiltrate mobile phones via a simple missed call on platforms like WhatsApp, enabling extensive access to the device’s data.
