Islamabad, In a significant meeting aimed at bolstering economic growth, Ms. Esther Perez Ruiz, the IMF Resident Representative in Pakistan, met with Dr. Kabir Ahmed Sidhu, Chairman of the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP). The discussion focused on enhancing competition within the market to foster sustainable economic development in Pakistan.
According to Competition Commission of Pakistan, Dr. Sidhu briefed Ms. Ruiz on several ongoing CCP initiatives designed to police cartels and promote a competitive market environment, essential for attracting foreign direct investment and boosting exports. The Chairman elaborated on the vital role that market competition plays in making Pakistani products and services competitive on an international scale. He also pointed out that societal costs are significant when supply and demand are imbalanced, leading to market inefficiencies.
One of the key initiatives discussed was the establishment of a Market Intelligence Unit (MIU) at CCP, which marks a shift from reactive to proactive enforcement strategies in policing anti-competitive practices. Additionally, Dr. Sidhu emphasized the CCP’s focus on revising legal and regulatory frameworks across various sectors to promote competition more effectively.
