Jammu, Taranjit Singh Tony, the General Secretary of the Indian National Congress in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, has accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of intentionally postponing Assembly elections in the region. This allegation comes amid growing concerns over the democratic process in the territory.
According to Kashmir Media Service, during a press interaction, Tony voiced his frustration with the ECI’s hesitance to schedule the Assembly polls, suggesting that the people of Jammu and Kashmir feel deceived by both the ECI and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He criticized the BJP-led central government for its apparent step-motherly treatment of the region and for depriving its people of their special status, leaving them feeling disenfranchised and aggrieved.
Tony questioned the rationale behind conducting Lok Sabha elections while leaving Assembly elections in limbo, accusing the BJP of failing to safeguard the rights and interests of Kashmir’s populace. He argued that the delay in holding Assembly elections reveals the BJP’s apprehension about losing the region’s support, interpreting this as a blatant disregard for democratic principles and the will of the people.
Emphasizing the importance of restoring democratic norms in Jammu and Kashmir, Tony called for immediate action to hold Assembly elections, asserting that the people of the region deserve justice, democracy, and fair representation.
