New Delhi, India has been identified as a key supplier of arms to Israel, a move that has sparked significant international scrutiny amid ongoing conflicts involving Israel and Palestinian territories. This development comes at a time when the global community, including the International Court of Justice, has been critical of actions in the region.
According to Kashmir Media Service, India recently dispatched 27 tons of ammunition and explosives to Israel aboard the Marianne Danica, a cargo ship registered in Denmark. This shipment, reportedly consisting of precision munitions and materials described as “dirty bombs,” is said to be destined for use in operations like the Rafah bombing, affecting areas where large numbers of Palestinians reside.
The shipment’s journey has been controversial, avoiding the Red Sea and making stops at ports in Cape Verde and Spain. Spanish authorities reportedly denied entry to the cargo, expressing opposition to being part of actions perceived as harmful to civilian populations.
India’s role as a significant arms supplier to Israel has become more prominent, particularly as it continues to maintain and even expand its defense and security ties with Israel, one of its major arms providers. This relationship is complicated by India’s recent agreements with Iran, including the operation of the strategic port of Chabahar, given the adversarial stance between Iran and Israel.
Defense analyst Brigadier (retired) Rashid Walin Janjua criticized India’s actions, stating in a television interview that India’s involvement in supplying weapons to Israel aligns it with operations widely condemned by the international community. He emphasized the dissonance in India’s policy, which, on one hand, claims to support democratic values and, on the other, participates in arms shipments that many view as exacerbating the conflict and humanitarian issues in Gaza.
The increasing scrutiny over India’s arms exports highlights the complex dynamics of international relations and peace processes in the Middle East, raising questions about the long-term implications of its foreign policy and defense strategies in the region.
