Kacha Dacoits Threaten Pakistan’s Economy and Aviation Sector, Warns Mian Zahid Hussain

Karachi, The issue of kacha robbers in Sindh has escalated, posing a significant threat not only to the local economy and the country’s reputation but also to the aviation industry, Mian Zahid Hussain, Chairman of the National Business Group Pakistan. Hussain, who is also the President of the Pakistan Businessmen and Intellectuals Forum and the All Karachi Industrial Alliance, highlighted the grave concern during discussions with the business community.

According to Pakistan Businessmen and Intellectuals Forum, the presence and activities of these dacoits have become increasingly bold, with social media posts showing them armed with heavy weaponry, including rockets, missiles, and anti-aircraft arms. This alarming display has sparked widespread concern globally, particularly among foreign airlines operating flights to Pakistan, fearing potential attacks on their aircraft which could lead to catastrophic damage.

Hussain pointed out that the aviation sector in Pakistan is already under strain, with international advisories previously issued against Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). The situation has been exacerbated by a recent inability to insure passengers, leading to cancellations and the potential for a reduced number of international flights to the country. This reduction could have significant repercussions for Pakistan’s connectivity with the rest of the world.

Moreover, Hussain emphasized the broader impact on the nation’s economy and trade, noting the unsafe conditions on major highways due to the presence of bandits. He called for decisive action against those within the political and landed elite who may be providing support to these outlaws.

The discussion also touched on the adverse effects of the kacha robbers’ activities on Pakistan’s exports, particularly to European countries. Despite the GSP plus status allowing duty-free entry for most Pakistani products into the European market, exports have seen a decline of 6.89% in the first eight months of the current financial year compared to the same period last year. Hussain stressed the need for attention to this decline, attributing it to decreased demand for Pakistani goods in Western, Southern, and Northern Europe.

Mian Zahid Hussain’s warnings underscore the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address the threats posed by kacha dacoits, not only to ensure the safety and security of the aviation sector but also to safeguard the economy and uphold Pakistan’s international reputation.
