Kaira for strengthening democracy

Lalamusa, August 22, 2012 (PPI-OT): Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira has said democracy, democratic attitude and institutions should be strengthened in the country.

Talking to the media and various delegations here, he said when the PPP government came to power, it struggled for holding fair, free and transparent elections in the country, therefore, an appointment of a chief election commissioner was made unanimously first time in the history of Pakistan after legislation.

The information minister said a constitutional office for members of the Election Commission was established and its members had time frame, designation and an oath. He said all these constitutional steps were taken for free, fair and transparent elections.

He added the formation of transparent voter lists was also the need of the hour and work on these lists was going on with the help of NADRA.

Kaira said the government would form a caretaker setup in the country with the help of the opposition so that free, fair and transparent elections could be possible.

He added that all these steps were taken by the PPP under its policy so that the people could elect their next government.

The information minister said the government would take all political parties into confidence about caretaker government whether they were in or out of parliament.

Kaira said drone attacks must be stopped which would affect Pakistan’s efforts for the elimination of terrorism from the country.

He said sectarianism was also unfortunate and elements involved in this menace were enemies of the country, adding that their evil designs would be foiled with the support of the people.
