Karachi: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab has taken notice of the increasing traffic accidents involving heavy vehicles and called for immediate action to address the issue. With numerous fatalities and injuries reported, the mayor has directed efforts to regulate the movement of dumpers and trucks on city roads.
According to a statement by Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Wahab expressed his concerns in a letter to the Additional Inspector General of Police Karachi. He highlighted the urgent need for intervention from civic agencies to tackle the problem of unregulated heavy vehicle movement. The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation Council has called on traffic police to implement necessary measures to control these vehicles.
The mayor recommended that dumpers and trucks should be restricted to operating during late hours, specifically from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., to minimize risks. However, vehicles required for essential municipal services may continue to operate during regular hours, subject to continuous monitoring by traffic police.
Emphasizing the government’s responsibility to protect citizens’ lives, Wahab expressed confidence in the Sindh Police’s ability to regulate heavy vehicle movement effectively. The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has pledged its support to the police in implementing these measures.
