Lahore: Photo Courtesy: Aurganzeb Haneef The School of Science and Engineering (SSE) at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) has decided to expand its graduate offerings and is launching new Masters and Doctoral programmes in sciences and engineering starting this year. Classes will begin in Fall 2012. New PhD degrees will now be offered in Biology, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering and Physics, which will add to existing SSE doctoral programmes in Computer Science and in Mathematics.

In addition to the existing Masters degree in Computer Science, a new Masters level degree in Electrical Engineering has been introduced (to replace earlier degree in Computer Engineering). Generous financial assistance opportunities will be available for admitted students, including in the form of student loans, research and teaching opportunities, tuition discounts, etc. The deadline for applying to these programmes is May 24, 2012 and details of admission requirements and criteria will be made available on the University website.

The launch of the new graduate degrees marks a major step forward and new phase for the LUMS School of Science and Engineering, which will now have a full palette of undergraduate as well as graduate degrees on offer in the sciences and engineering. SSE was established in 2008 as the first private research school for science and engineering in Pakistan and with a vision to carry out world-class, multidisciplinary education and research. Commenting on the new graduate degrees, Prof. Sohail Qureshi, Dean of the School of Science and Engineering, said, “The new graduate programmes will broaden our horizons and help SSE become a globally competitive leader in science and engineering education and research.” Dr. Qureshi added, “These new programmes will further strengthen our existing undergraduate programmes.”

Since its creation, LUMS SSE has focused on the goal of producing a new generation of scientists and engineers who would not only be technically competent but innovative and globally competitive. The first full batch of undergraduates in all its disciplines will graduate in June 2012 and already the results have been stellar with a number of its undergraduate students already having gained internships in the world’s leading research laboratories (including CERN), direct full-scholarship admissions to the best Universities in the world (including Harvard, Oxford, etc.) and others holding job offers to leading global companies (including Microsoft).

The new graduate degrees are also a major expansion of the LUMS graduate offerings and builds upon existing graduate degrees offered in Computer Science, Mathematics, Economics and Business, including the flagship MBA degree with which LUMS was launched a quarter century ago. Dr. Adil Najam, the Vice Chancellor of LUMS said, “This is a momentous step for LUMS as a University and a major achievement of our SSE faculty. In less than four years, the School has established its research and teaching quality not only in Pakistan but globally. Our faculty is doing world class, cutting-edge research and our students are sought after by the best universities and employers in the world. Science and Engineering at LUMS has clearly arrived.”

Dr. Najam said that the graduate programme was a clear and obvious next step for SSE, which is a need of the School as well as of the country. He added, “We are committed to a focus on quality rather than quantity. We will measure and judge our success not by how many students we have but by the quality of their scholarship and research and its relevance to the great challenges of our times.”
