Maldives to Strengthen Ties with China Following Parliamentary Elections

Following a significant victory in the recent parliamentary elections, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu’s People’s National Congress (PNC) is poised to enhance the country’s strategic relationship with China. This shift comes as the PNC seeks to reduce Maldives’ dependence on India and is expected to fast-track Chinese-funded infrastructure projects. According to Kashmir Media Service, analysts believe the election results, which granted the PNC and its allies over 70 of the 93 seats in the assembly, indicate a clear mandate to pursue closer ties with Beijing. This development could potentially set back India’s efforts to limit China’s influence in the Indian Ocean region. President Muizzu, who took office six months ago, has committed to an infrastructure boom, with plans including new apartments, bridges, and an airport, despite warnings from the International Monetary Fund about a high risk of debt distress. This focus on development follows a decade of Chinese influence under a previous pro-Beijing ad
ministration, which had waned under Muizzu’s predecessor, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who favored stronger ties with India. Muizzu’s administration highlighted the strategic shift during his first official overseas visit to China in January, rather than New Delhi, signaling a robust partnership with Beijing moving forward.
