Massive protests across Kashmir against music concert

Srinagar, September 06, 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, massive protest demonstrations were held across Kashmir, today, against the controversial Zubin Mehta’s concert, which is scheduled to be held in Srinagar, tomorrow. People came out of their houses in Srinagar, Baramulla, Gandarbal, Kupwara, Islamabad, Badgam, Kulgam, Pulwama, Shopian and other areas of the occupied territory and took out rallies against the concert.

Hundreds of students of Kashmir University took to the streets in Srinagar raising, “Go India Go Back” slogans. Call for the demonstrations was given by veteran Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani. Strike will be observed in the occupied territory, tomorrow, against the concert.

On the other hand, Indian police and paramilitary forces intensified frisking and checking in Srinagar and adjoining areas a day ahead of the musical concert. Troops carried out crackdowns near the historic Lal Chowk and Hyderpora to ensure smooth conduct of the orchestra.

Hurriyet leaders Agha Syed Hasan Al-Moosvi Al-Safvi, Ghulam Ahmad Mir, Aasiya Andrabi and newly-elected President of the High Court Bar Association, Mian Abdul Qayoom, in their statements opposed the concert, saying that Zubin Mehta had played his music to boost morale of Israelis during 1967 war and was doing the same for Indians in occupied Kashmir.

APHC leaders, Zafar Akbar Butt and Mukhtar Ahmad Waza addressing different public gatherings at Khag in Badgam and Tral urged the international community to uphold the values of humanity by helping Kashmiris get rid of oppressive bondage of India. Indian authorities arrested APHC leaders, Muhammad Yousuf Naqash and Javed Ahmed Mir in Srinagar, today.
