Message of Prime Minister on birthday of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto

Islamabad, January 05, 2013 (PPI-OT): January 5 marks the 85th birth anniversary of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, founding chairman of Pakistan People’s Party and the first elected Prime Minister of the country. I would like to congratulate the people of Pakistan and the workers of PPP on the birth anniversary of Shaheed Bhutto.

It was Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s vision, political sagacity and wisdom that marshalled the broken nation, repaired its confidence, boosted its morale and fostered democracy.

He succeeded in creating consensus across all elements of national opinion and federating units and gave the country a constitution. This was the greatest feather in his cap. It is a tribute to his political vision that despite undemocratic interruptions, the Constitution has continued to hold the federation together and is a guarantor of its political and territorial sovereignty.

Political and democratic activism that has become a feature of Pakistani politics today owes its genesis to the struggle of Shaheed Bhutto that he launched for their political empowerment. He can rightly be credited for recasting and redefining politics. He created awareness among the masses about their political and fundamental rights.

By launching Pakistan’s nuclear programme, he made Pakistan’s defence impregnable. His famous comment that “even if we have to eat grass, we will make a nuclear bomb” became a mission statement that ultimately resulted in equipping Pakistan with nuclear deterrence.

Shaheed Bhutto is not merely the name of an individual but of an ideology, a mission and a passion. He is a metaphor of people’s empowerment, their welfare and self-esteem. He chose to go to gallows instead of compromising on his core principles. He had his eye on history and wanted it to judge him.

The dictatorial regime only managed to hang him physically but his idea will live forever.

We have achieved democracy after an arduous struggle. Let all political forces close their ranks and strengthen the democratic system that is central to the country’s socio-economic development.
