Modi Government Accused of Forcing Passage of Controversial Criminal Laws in India

Chandigarh: Kumari Selja, Congress General Secretary and Member of Parliament, has raised concerns over the Modi government’s recent enactment of three new criminal laws, criticizing the process by which these were passed. Selja claims that the government suspended 146 members of Parliament to facilitate the adoption of these laws, calling for their reconsideration and proper debate in Parliament.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Selja in a statement pointed out that the controversial amendments to the Indian Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code, and Indian Evidence Act were passed under dubious circumstances. He argues that these laws transform India from a welfare state to a police state, necessitating a renewed discussion in Parliament. Selja also highlighted that these laws, labeled as “black laws,” were neither subjected to committee discussions nor debated adequately in the House, bypassing essential democratic processes.
