Monsoon Rains and Floods Claim 126 Lives in Pakistan, Emergency Declared in Upper Chitral

Islamabad: Torrential rains and flash floods across Pakistan have resulted in 126 deaths, 239 injuries, and significant damage to over 700 houses between July 1 and August 4, 2024. The severe weather has led to a flood emergency declaration in Upper Chitral district to facilitate ongoing relief efforts.

According to United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the heavy monsoon rains have caused widespread devastation, including a Severe Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) that hit Booni Gloe Nullah in the Upper Chitral district. This GLOF event severely affected a local bridge, power house, and irrigation canals, compounding the challenges faced by the local population.

In response to the crisis, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Government has declared a flood emergency in Upper Chitral until August 30, 2024, to ensure coordinated relief activities and support for the affected communities.
