Muslim Nurse Arrested in Assam for Pakistan Independence Day Greeting

Dispur: A Muslim nurse was arrested in Assam for posting a greeting on Pakistan’s Independence Day, in what critics are calling a severe example of rising intolerance under the BJP-led government.

According to Kashmir Media Service announcement issued on 16 August 2024, the nurse, identified as Anwara Khatun, employed at a local hospital in Tamulpur, faced arrest after her WhatsApp status celebrating the event on August 14 sparked outrage among local Bajrang Dal members, who demanded her detention. This arrest is part of a broader trend where personal expressions related to identity and cultural affiliations are increasingly leading to punitive actions, particularly against Muslims in BJP-dominated regions.

The incident has drawn sharp criticism from human rights advocates and members of the Muslim community, who see it as a violation of freedom of expression and an indicator of the BJP government’s escalating hostility towards religious minorities. The situation raises concerns about the suppression of personal freedoms under the guise of national loyalty and public order.
