National Assembly Speaker Stresses Link Between Gender Equality and Environmental Sustainability

Islamabad: In a compelling address during the Regional Meeting on Gender Empowerment and Green Economy, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq articulated the critical interdependence of gender equality and environmental sustainability. The meeting, held on August 12, 2024, focused on collaborative strategies to empower women and promote sustainable development in alignment with the International Conference on Population and Development’s 30-year objectives.

According to National Assembly of Pakistan, Speaker Sadiq emphasized the pivotal role of parliamentary action in advancing these interconnected goals. He detailed Pakistan’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and highlighted legislative achievements aimed at enhancing gender equality and environmental protection. “The success of our sustainability efforts is inseparably linked to our progress in gender equality,” Sadiq noted, asserting the importance of integrating these goals to achieve comprehensive development outcomes.

During his keynote, Sadiq also recounted significant national initiatives, such as the transition of Pakistan’s Parliament to 100% solar energy, making it the first in the world to achieve this green milestone. He underscored the importance of sustainable energy practices and forest conservation in combating climate change. Additionally, he stressed that a gender-responsive green economy is crucial not just for environmental recovery but for ensuring social justice and economic resilience.

The Speaker’s remarks also touched on Pakistan’s active participation in international climate negotiations and its advocacy for vulnerable communities, underlining the country’s broader commitment to impactful environmental policies and global cooperation.
