National Highway Authority award contract of construction of Karachi- Hyderabad Motorway M-9 to Malaysian Company, costing Rs 24.93 billion

Islamabad: Chairman National Highway Authority Syed Muhammad Ali Gardezi presided over meeting of NHA Executive Board today which accorded approval to award of contract of construction of Karachi- Hyderabad Motorway (M-9) to Malaysian Construction Company M/s BINAPURI Holding, on BOT basis with concessionaire period of 28 years. Existing 4-Lane Karachi-Hyderabad Super Highway will be upgraded into 6-Lane Motorway.

NHA had advertised for open competition amongst the interested parties for construction of the motorway. Several companies including NLC, BINAPURI Holding Malaysia, EOBI, SAMBO, CRBC China and one Turkish Construction Company submitted their proposals. After detailed financial and technical evaluation, proposal of M/s BINAPURI Holding was accepted.

On this occasion Syed Muhammad Ali Gardezi said proposed Karachi-Hyderabad Motorway will be built on BOT basis, costing Rs.24.93 billion. 136 Km long Motorway will be completed in three (03) years.

7xInterchanges, 2xService Areas and 16xToll Plazas will also be constructed. He said construction work on this project is likely to start during the next month. He told the Board members that heavy amounts are required for construction of Motorways and NHA is endeavouring to reduce financial load on national exchequer.

To this effect foreign investment in NHA projects is being encouraged and construction of M-9 on BOT basis is a practical step towards such activities. He said, there are vast opportunities of foreign investment in Highway Projects and we are trying to involve foreign construction companies in this construction process.

Khalid Naseem Secretary NHA participated the meeting.
