Opportunities in Australia’s Engineering Sector for Pakistani Citizens 

Canberra, February 20, 2023 (PPI-OT):The High Commission for Pakistan in Canberra today, organized a webinar on “Opportunities in Australia’s Engineering Sector for Pakistani Citizens” as part of its ongoing “Opportunities Conference” initiative. The webinar attracted around 6,000 attendees, including Deans of various universities, Heads of Department, qualified engineers and engineering students. The webinar was broadcasted live on the High Commission’s YouTube Channel and Facebook page.

The webinar featured a panel of 9 speakers, including professional experts, policy advisors, educators, and representatives from prominent engineering associations and networks in Australia including Engineers Australia, Pak-Aus Engineers Association, Department of Transport Queensland, Sitecorp Construction, and AECOM. The speakers provided guidance about range of services and resources in Australia for engineers and engineering students, including information on career opportunities, industry trends, and professional development.

During the webinar, the speakers discussed the qualifications and requirements for working as an engineer in Australia, including registration with Engineers Australia, relevant degrees, the need to meet specific professional standards and the steps required to secure a job in Australia. The speakers also shared their positive experiences, expectations of hiring industries and the benefits of working in Australia.

In his remarks, High Commissioner H.E. Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri highlighted the growing significance and contributions of Pakistani Diaspora in Australia, particularly in the engineering sector that currently employs more than 11,000 Pakistanis. He added that there is a strong demand for engineers in Australia which is likely to grow over the next five years.

The High Commissioner stated that over 200 universities and degree awarding institutions in Pakistan offer engineering programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. There is a surplus pool of high quality trained engineers in Pakistan and given the strong demand for engineers in Australia, the employability of Pakistani engineers in Australia could be a win-win cooperation for both the countries.

The High Commission for Pakistan in Australia is committed to supporting the professional development of Pakistani citizens and will continue to hold webinars to provide information about in-demand professional fields in Australia, including the qualifications and requirements for working in those fields, as well as the current job market and economic conditions.
