Hyderabad: Asaduddin Owaisi, the President of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), has commented on the recent assembly election results in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, suggesting that the outcome reflects widespread discontent with the abolition of Article 370. He also predicted a challenging tenure for the potential Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, describing him as likely to be “the weakest” in Indian history.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Owaisi’s remarks followed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) failure to secure any seats in the region. In a media interview, Owaisi interpreted the electoral outcome as a direct expression of the Kashmiri people’s anger over the central government’s decision to revoke the special status granted under Article 370. He highlighted that the BJP’s attempts to split various demographic groups in Kashmir did not succeed and expressed concerns over the political dynamics in Jammu where the BJP won 27 seats while the Congress secured only one.
Owaisi further criticized the legislative changes following the revocation of Article 370, particularly opposing the provision that allows the Lieutenant Governor (LG), appointed by the central government, to appoint five MLAs. He argued that such a move undermines the authority of the elected Chief Minister and poses constitutional issues, stating, “If the sitting Chief Minister cannot appoint MLAs, but the LG, appointed by the PM, can, then what is the role of the CM?”
These comments reflect broader tensions and ongoing debates about governance and autonomy in the region following the significant constitutional changes enacted in 2019.
