Pak-China Women’s Development Initiative Proposed to Empower Women

Lahore: Zafar Iqbal, Vice President of the Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI), has emphasized the need to establish the Pak-China Women’s Development Employment Initiative. This program aims to empower women in Pakistan and China by offering technical and vocational training, which could significantly advance gender equality and women’s empowerment in both nations.

Iqbal stated that this initiative should be launched under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to foster growth among young Pakistani businesswomen. He noted that the experience of Chinese women could aid in the social development of Pakistani women. The initiative plans to offer short courses in areas such as garments, food, handicrafts, languages, and information technology. These efforts are part of China’s broader strategy to empower women and integrate them into the “high-tech man force” needed for competitive markets, including the Gwadar free zones.

The Vice President highlighted the potential for women to be agents of change with access to technical and professional education. He pointed out that the garment sector presents significant opportunities for women to leverage their skills and pursue careers in Pakistan’s upscale garment industry. Additionally, he mentioned the potential for collaboration between Chinese and Pakistani women through online platforms for trading clothing products.

Iqbal also underscored the talent of Pakistani women, who have previously lacked platforms to showcase their skills. The proposed center would be the first of its kind to provide organized income-generating opportunities for skilled women. The Pak-China Women’s Development Employment Center aims to promote financial independence for women, enabling them to improve their living standards and combat poverty. PCJCCI has consistently advocated for projects that enhance business opportunities between Pakistan and China, and this initiative could open new avenues for women in both countries.
