Islamabad: Pakistan has emphasized that expanding regular migration pathways remains the most effective strategy to reduce irregular migration and address the vulnerabilities associated with it.
According to Radio Pakistan, this statement was made by the Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, during the General Debate of the Second International Migration Review Forum at the UN General Assembly.
The Ambassador highlighted the importance of establishing more accessible legal channels through bilateral labour agreements, Memoranda of Understanding, and mobility partnerships. These initiatives are designed to align global labour market needs with the skills and expertise of workers, thereby offering a structured approach to migration.
Ambassador Ahmad also expressed concern over increasing trends of Islamophobia, xenophobia, and harmful narratives targeting migrants. He stressed the necessity of comprehensive protection for migrant workers throughout the entire migration cycle, which includes fair recruitment practices, stronger legal safeguards, equal treatment, and decent working conditions.
