Karachi: Indonesian Consul General in Karachi, Madzaker M.A., has highlighted the necessity of strengthening cooperation between Pakistan and Indonesia in the edible oil sector. He emphasized that such partnerships are crucial for sustainable development and mutual prosperity, during a meeting with Sheikh Umer Rehan, Chairman of the Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturers Association (PVMA), at the Indonesian Consulate in Karachi.
The Consul General noted that Indonesia, with its vast experience in palm oil cultivation and processing, is well-positioned to offer Pakistan technical assistance, training, and technology transfer. Enhanced agricultural cooperation and the exchange of expertise are expected to bolster economic ties between the two nations.
PVMA Chairman Sheikh Umer Rehan pointed out that Pakistan is a significant importer of edible oil from Indonesia, with palm oil imports playing a central role in the trade relationship. He disclosed that approximately 90 percent of the palm oil consumed in Pakistan originates from Indonesia, highlighting the strategic importance of this bilateral trade.
Sheikh Umer Rehan explained that Pakistan’s domestic edible oil production falls short of national needs, necessitating reliance on imports. He emphasized the strategic significance of trade relations with Indonesia, given that edible oil is a basic necessity in Pakistan and that Indonesia is the world’s largest palm oil producer.
However, he acknowledged that recent years have seen challenges in the form of administrative, commercial, and technical barriers impacting cooperation. He advocated for sustained bilateral dialogue and consultation to address these issues, which could facilitate smoother trade relations.
The PVMA Chairman suggested potential collaboration with Indonesia in developing value-added products. He proposed joint business forums, exchange of trade delegations, and new investment opportunities to leverage each country’s strengths. Indonesian investment in palm oil refining and storage in Pakistan could significantly lower import costs and create employment.
Both sides engaged in detailed discussions on industry-related issues and mutual trade interests. Rashid Jan Muhammad and Ahmed Ghulam Hussain also participated, emphasizing the need to broaden collaboration across sectors. The parties reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close coordination to bolster Pakistan’s edible oil sector in the future.
