Islamabad: The Pakistani military has confirmed the test firing of a ballistic missile on May 3 as tensions with India rise following a recent militant attack in Indian-administered Kashmir.
According to Radio Free Europe Radio Liberty, the Pakistani army released a video showing the missile launch, with soldiers celebrating after the successful test. The military identified the tested weapon as the Abdali surface-to-surface missile system, which has a range of 450 kilometers.
The situation between Pakistan and India has intensified, with India accusing Pakistan of involvement in the Kashmir attack. This has led to exchanges of fire across the Line of Control (LoC), the contested border in the region. Pakistan previously warned of an imminent Indian attack, which did not occur.
In efforts to de-escalate, Pakistan has reached out to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates for assistance in reducing tensions. However, the recent missile test could potentially escalate the situation further. India had cauti
oned that such a move would be provocative, though there has been no immediate reaction from New Delhi following the test.
Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended their congratulations to the scientists and engineers responsible for the missile test, as stated in an official statement. Security analyst Syed Muhammad Ali highlighted the symbolic significance of the Abdali missile, named after Ahmad Shah Durrani, a historical figure associated with the conquest of India.
Ali emphasized that the timing of the missile launch is a strategic message to India, especially after India’s threats to suspend a vital water-sharing agreement. This test follows Pakistan’s previous missile launch in August 2024, involving the Shaheen II ballistic missile, noted for its 2,000-kilometer range according to the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
Additionally, in October 2023, Pakistan successfully tested the Ababbeel weapon system, which the military asserts is part of effor
ts to enhance regional deterrence and strategic stability.
