Pakistan Elected to UN Security Council as Non-Permanent Member

New York, Pakistan has been elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, securing a substantial majority vote. The election took place on Thursday, following an extensive campaign, and Pakistan has pledged to contribute to addressing the significant challenges facing the global community.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Pakistan received 182 votes out of the 193-member General Assembly, surpassing the required two-thirds majority of 124 votes. The announcement was met with loud applause in the General Assembly hall when its president, Dennis Francis, declared the winners of the five non-permanent seats. Pakistan, Denmark, Greece, Panama, and Somalia will replace Japan, Ecuador, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland, whose terms will end on December 31.

Munir Akram, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN, expressed his elation and stated that Pakistan’s election reflects the international community’s confidence in its ability to uphold the UN Charter’s purposes and principles. He emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to working with other Council members to advance shared objectives, including conflict prevention and peaceful resolutions.

Pakistan, which will begin its eighth term on January 1, replacing Japan for the Asian seat, plans to focus on several key areas: promoting peace and security in South Asia, upholding the principle of self-determination for the people of Palestine and Kashmir, normalizing relations in Afghanistan, finding equitable solutions to security challenges in Africa, and enhancing the effectiveness of UN peacekeeping operations.

Over the past 50 years, Pakistan has been a significant contributor to UN Peacekeeping Missions, currently deploying over 4,000 troops and personnel worldwide. The new members will join the five permanent members with veto power—the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, and France—and the five non-permanent members elected last year: Algeria, Guyana, South Korea, Sierra Leone, and Slovenia.
