Islamabad, The Pakistan Navy celebrated the launching of its first Hangor Class submarine at Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group Company Ltd, Shuangliu Base in Wuhan, China, with Admiral Naveed Ashraf, Chief of the Naval Staff, attending as the Chief Guest.
According to Pakistan Navy, Admiral Ashraf, during the ceremony, emphasized the critical role of maritime security in the current geostrategic climate and Pakistan Navy’s commitment to ensuring a safe maritime environment. He commended the Hangor Class submarines’ advanced capabilities and noted their expected contribution to regional peace and stability. The project, he remarked, not only marks progress in maritime technology but also symbolizes the deep-rooted friendship between Pakistan and China.
The contract for eight Hangor Class submarines was signed between the Government of Pakistan and the China Shipbuilding and Offshore International Company Ltd (CSOC) during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Pakistan. In a unique arrangement, four submarines will be constructed in China, and the remaining four will be built in Pakistan at Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works Ltd (KS and EW) with a transfer of technology agreement. The submarines will be equipped with modern weapons and sensors, allowing them to engage targets from a distance.
The event was attended by senior officials from both Pakistan and China, including representatives from Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group Company Ltd and CSOC.
