New york: Pakistan has reaffirmed its pledge to continue promoting Buddha’s universal message of peace, harmony, and tranquility in cooperation with the international community. This commitment was articulated by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, during his address at the International Day of Vesak 2026 held at the United Nations.
According to Radio Pakistan, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad highlighted Pakistan’s deep historical connection with Buddhism, emphasizing that Buddhist pilgrims and scholars continue to visit significant sites such as Taxila, Swat, and Takht-e-Bahi. He noted that Vesak reflects Buddha’s enduring message of peace, compassion, and mindfulness, which remains highly relevant amid growing global conflicts and divisions.
The Permanent Representative further elaborated on Buddhism’s connection with Pakistan, rooted in the ancient land of Gandhara. This connection is deeply woven into Pakistan’s socio-cultural fabric and continues to shape the country’s pluralistic and progressive outlook. He emphasized that this heritage reinforces Pakistan’s commitment to interfaith harmony and peaceful coexistence, as demonstrated through the UN General Assembly resolution on promoting interreligious and intercultural dialogue and cooperation for peace, jointly tabled by the Philippines and Pakistan.
