Pakistan showcased at Rio+20 Conference

Karachi, June 20, 2012 (PPI-OT): Pakistan successfully staged the plenary session ’A changing world: Business as Unusual’ at the Rio+20 Corporate Sustainability Forum of the United Nations Global Compact in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil along with co-hosts Bangladesh, Vietnam Networks and the United Nation Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific. The sessions were moderated by Marc Proksch of UNESCAP and Fasih ul Karim Siddiqui of UN Global Compact Pakistan local network.

The theme challenged businesses to adopt innovative approaches to achieve corporate sustainability and featured two social enterprise case studies from the Asia-Pacific region of Indus Motor of Pakistan and Arcelor Mittal of India representing innovative and viable business solutions to environmental and social challenges.

Speakers included Parvez Ghias, CEO Indus Motor, Sudhir Sinha, Director CSR Arcelor Mittal, Margareta Wahlstrom, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Disaster Risk Reduction, Haji Muhammad Javed, President Employers Federation of Pakistan, Atiur Rahman, Governor Bangladesh Central Bank, Ambassador Chuk Ki Ju, Secretary General Global Compact Korea and Doan Duy Khuong, Vice Executive President Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Participants discussed the components of an enabling environment for corporate sustainability, the motivations for business innovation and the challenges they face. Discussions explored the roles of trans national companies, SMEs, government, NGOs and consumers in promoting responsible business as well as the effect globalization has had on these different actors in achieving sustainability.
