Pakistan’s July Weather Review Predicts Continued Monsoon Relief but Drought Concerns Persist in Balochistan

Islamabad: The Pakistan Meteorological Department’s latest Drought Bulletin for July 2024 reports varied climatic conditions across the country, with significant rainfall improving soil moisture which is expected to benefit agriculture and ecosystems particularly in the coming month. However, areas in western Balochistan continue to face drought conditions with no immediate relief in sight.

According to Pakistan Meteorological Department, most regions experienced moderate to heavy rainfall in July, except for western Balochistan where drought persists. Temperature analysis shows above-normal mean temperatures across much of Pakistan, with anomalies ranging from -2.0 to 4.0°C. Looking ahead to August, monsoon rains are expected to continue, which should help alleviate soil moisture deficits further and impact the agricultural sector positively.

The forecast for daytime maximum temperatures in August suggests normal to below-normal levels across most of the country, except for the upper regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan, which may experience warmer conditions. Nighttime temperatures are expected to be warmer than usual nationwide, with significant variances in Gilgit-Baltistan and southwestern Balochistan.

Relief from moisture stress has been noted in the Mithi and Chorr regions of Sindh, contrasting with the continuing drought challenges in Balochistan. The Meteorological Department has advised disaster management authorities to plan disaster risk management activities based on the current forecasts for August 2024.
