PM Directs Shift of High-Loss Electricity Feeders to Solar Energy

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the transition of high-loss electricity feeders to solar energy, seeking cooperation from communities and provincial governments.

According to Radio Pakistan, the Prime Minister chaired a high-level meeting in Islamabad focused on solarization to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply in remote areas. The initiative aims to reduce losses from loss-making feeders and provide continuous power supply. Sharif emphasized launching pilot projects for Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) and Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO) and stressed the importance of consultations with elected representatives and community involvement for success.

The meeting highlighted that converting these feeders to solar energy would establish environmentally friendly, low-cost, and sustainable micro-grids for local populations. It was noted that local communities, along with provincial and federal governments, would partner in the project.

The initiative is expected to provide low-cost electricity and significantly reduce future losses for power distribution companies. The Prime Minister granted in-principle approval for the project and directed immediate commencement of pilot projects in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
