PM Shehbaz Sharif Calls for Ceasefire and Palestinian State at SCO Summit

Islamabad: During the 23rd meeting of the Council of the Heads of Government of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made a poignant appeal for an unconditional and immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. His statements were part of a broader discourse on regional stability and cooperation among SCO member states.

According to Press Information Department, Prime Minister Sharif underscored the international community’s responsibility to address the situation in Gaza, advocating for the creation of a Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital. His remarks highlighted the urgency of addressing what he referred to as ongoing genocide in the region.

The meeting also served as a platform for transitioning the SCO chairmanship to Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, with the next CHG meeting scheduled to take place in Russia. Prime Minister Sharif expressed Pakistan’s full support for Russia’s chairmanship and reiterated the country’s commitment to the SCO’s objectives.

In addition to focusing on geopolitical issues, the Prime Minister urged SCO members to prioritize collaboration over political differences to address shared challenges and promote stability and development within the region. He thanked the member states for their dedication and support in ensuring the smooth conduct of the summit.

Leaders from SCO member states, including China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan, attended the event, alongside representatives from observer states and special guests like Mongolia and Turkmenistan. The summit was also attended by high-ranking officials such as India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, illustrating the SCO’s broad geopolitical influence.
