Lahore, September 19, 2012 (PPI-OT): The Union Council level of the Punjab Youth Festival 2012 concluded on Tuesday registering record participation in the second round too after the first round also yielded record turnover. On the 12th and final day of the second phase, nearly all the competitions in the Union Council level concluded on Tuesday with some of the remaining events are set to be played today (Wednesday).
The events that finished included apart from sports, competitions among ladies in cooking, dress designing and healthy baby also registered record participation. In just sports events in the province, there was more than 580,888 youngsters’ participation in a total of about 4500 events. On the other hand nearly 10,000 Union Councils too part in the events and 144,239 were triumphant in their respective categories of events.
On the final day, 611 sports competitions were held among 58,888 youngsters which were conducted at 1397 Union Councils and 15, 901 were the winners. In the provincial capital’s nine towns, the youngsters of Lahore like other districts of the province took active part in sports events registering 373 figures from 29 UCs and in 31 events 187 got the top honour. Apart from naat khani, Qirat, the participants displayed great interest in competitions like arm wrestling, badminton, billiard, weightlifting, tug of war, bodybuilding and volleyball events. At Data Ganj Bakhsh town, UC 79’s Asif XI defeated Faisal XI in the volleyball contest 2-0 with a score of 25-17, 25-14. In 62 kgs weightlifting competitions, Ravi Town’s Yousuf Usman won from UC 10, Rashid Asif of Data Ganj Bakhsh Town UC 67 got to the title while Mazhar Shakoor of Samanabad Town UC 128 won his weight category.
In 77 kgs category, Gulberg Town’s Rehan Khalid of UV 121 was the winner, Qasim Ali of UC 121 claimed top position while Rana Naveed of Shalamar Town was winner from UC 52 and Anwar Javed was second in the same weight class. In 94 kgs weight class, Mohamamd Junaid of Wagha Town won from UC 55 and Jabar Gulraiz was placed second. In bodybuilding events, Zubair of Shalimar Town was declared the winner in 65 weight class, Husnain Naveed of Data Ganj Bakhsh Town was winner in the same weight class while Azmat Ali of Gulberg Town was named winner, Ravi Town’s Jalil Abbas and Iqbal Abbas of Iqbal Town reached the top.
In 70 kgs weight category, Zafar Ali of Shalimar Town , Muneer Amjad of Nishtar Town, Safdar Ali of Ravi Town were adjudged winner. In Lahore division 6137 people from 103 union councils had competitions in 101 events on the day. On the other hand, competitions like essay writing, painting, milli naghme held under the auspices of the Education department recorded the participation of 1387 students.
The second level of the festival also saw big participation of families in healthy baby competition with around 134,000 families taking part in the events. In other parts of the province also, tough competitions continued on the final day and great enthusiasm was seen among the participants.
On the day 14,949 students took part in 112 events of painting from 327 UCs and the final selection of winners is expected tomorrow. Meanwhile,, 4352 youngsters of 38 UCs contested in 25 sports events and 522 of them moved to the next round of the competitions in Nankana Sahib. At Sargodha’s healthy baby contest 197 families took part in the event while in the other general events large number students took part.
In Rawalpindi the figure was 5145, Sargodha registered 6498, Attock had 1503, Gujranwala got 14347, Sahiwal reached to 2555 mark of participation, Multan had,4378, Dera Ghazi Khan’s participation was 58888 and in Faisalabad there were 9053 took part in 69 events. Similarly in small cities like Gujjar Khan there were 464 participants, Murree 300, Bhakkar 1059.
