Secretary Commerce inaugurates Seminar on Trade in Services – Issues and Prospects

Islamabad, June 20, 2013 (PPI-OT): Mr. Munir Qureshi, Secretary Commerce, here Thursday inaugurated a Seminar on “Trade in Services – Issues and Prospects” organized by the WTO Wing of Ministry of Commerce. The objective of holding this seminar was to provide a knowledge sharing forum to the stakeholders in a consultative and interactive setting.

The topics covered, ‘Understanding GATS’, ‘The Changing Dynamics of Services Trade: Pakistan’s Potential in Model-1 and Mode-4 of Services Trade’, ‘Trade in Financial Services’, and ‘Regional Potential for Trade in Services: The Case of Pakistan’.

Ms. Anjum Assad Amin, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Commerce welcomed the participants and deliberated upon functions and responsibilities of WTO Wing.

The speakers included: Ms. Shaista Sohail, Member Capital Development Authority, Mr. Noman Ishtiaq, Consultant, Ministry of Finance, Dr. Viqar Ahmed, Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI), Mr. Raashid Mazari, Executive Director, NAVTTC and Mr. Ahmad Gulzar (M Phil), Research Scholar, Pakistan Institute of Development Economics.

The experts highlighted the importance of Pakistan’s Services Sector, and its potential to play a vital role in sustaining economic development by engaging its vast human resources. Services Sector has emerged as one of the main drivers of economic growth during the recent years. Pakistan’s Services sector contribution in GDP during 2012-13 was 57.7 percent with a growth performance of 3.7%. Exports of services contributed over US $ 5 billion to Pakistan’s trade during the same years.

The Seminar was attended by Mr. Azam Khan, Executive Director, Ministry of Commerce, representatives of other government organizations, Islamabad Women Chambers, Overseas Employment Promoters Association and Private sector organizations.

Closing remarks were delivered by Mr. Sajjad Ahmed Bhutta, the Additional Secretary Commerce.
