Sindh Police to Take Legal Action Against Those Blocking Highways, Says IG Sindh

Karachi, The Inspector General (IG) of Sindh Police, Ghulam Nabi Memon, announced that strict legal action will be taken against anyone who blocks highways and roads in Sindh for protests. During a meeting held at the Central Police Office Karachi, IG Sindh emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and order on national highways and discussed police deployment strategies to ensure this.

According to Sindh Police, the meeting was attended by the IG National Highways/Motorway Police and other high-ranking officials. The discussion focused on recent incidents of crime along the M9 and N5 national highways and how to make police deployment more effective and integrated. Strategies were devised to improve the deployment of Sindh Police at all kantas (weigh stations) on national highways and to address criminal elements that might exploit any disruption.

IG Sindh clarified that no one would be permitted to block main highways and roads, and that a formal case would be registered against anyone violating the law. He stressed that regular permits and monitoring were essential to prevent highways from becoming dilapidated due to overweight vehicles, and he urged coordinated links between the Sindh Police and the National Highways and Motorways departments.

The IG Sindh appointed DIG Hyderabad Traffic as the focal person for coordinating with the National Highways and Motorways department and instructed the DIGs of Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, and Nawabshah to provide additional police manpower and vehicles for effective patrolling. Additionally, a working group was to be formed to facilitate joint patrolling plans with the Motorway Police.

The IG Motorway Police noted that the Prime Minister of Pakistan and the federal government were focused on measures to protect national highways. He announced that around 2,600 new personnel would be recruited this year, with test centers established in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, and Shaheed Benazirabad. He requested the Sindh Police to ensure foolproof security at these test centers.

The IG Motorway Police also highlighted that in the last three and a half months, 65,543 challans were registered against vehicles carrying excess weight, with 246 cases resulting in 227 vehicles taken into police custody.

The meeting was attended by various top officials, including Additional IG Karachi, DIG Traffic Karachi, Baal Mushafa, and DIGs from Sukkur, Larkana, Hyderabad, and Shaheed Benazirabad, some of whom joined via video link.
