Karachi: In a significant move to streamline waste management services, the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board has launched an online billing portal aimed at digitizing the billing and payment system for cleanliness services in industrial areas. During the inaugural ceremony held at the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation office, Imtiaz Ali Shah, Managing Director of the board, highlighted that charges will be levied where services are rendered.
According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the event saw the participation of key officials such as Junaid Naqi, President of KATI, Gulzar Firoz, President of PTASZ, and other notable members of the industrial sector. Imtiaz Ali Shah noted that the new portal will enable industrialists to access billing information and make timely payments, addressing previous challenges related to billing delays and payment issues.
The portal also facilitates the registration of new industries and companies, with 2,489 already registered in the system. The Sindh Solid Waste Board has drafted a proposal to collect service charges in serviced areas, which will be submitted to the government.
Imtiaz Ali Shah also criticized the current state of municipal tax collection, citing inadequate services due to contractor failures and the rise of a private contractor mafia. The Sindh government has enacted Section 144 to address these issues, but enforcement remains weak. The board is developing a mechanism to ensure effective service delivery and tax collection, reinforcing the principle that taxes should be collected where services are provided.
