Social Media Mobilizes for Release of Umar Khalid and Muslim Activists in India

New Delhi: A significant social media campaign has emerged, calling for the release of student leader Umar Khalid and other Muslim activists, who have been detained for 1400 days under what supporters claim are fabricated charges.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the campaign uses hashtags such as #UmarKhalid1400DaysInJail and #ReleasePoliticalPrisoners to highlight the plight of Khalid and his co-activists, who were previously active in protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The movement has garnered support from various sectors, including Bollywood celebrities, journalists, and a Rajya Sabha MP, all of whom have labeled the continued detention of these activists as a “travesty of justice” and criticized it as a punitive measure for opposing the Modi government’s controversial policies.

This growing wave of support underscores the increasing scrutiny of India’s judicial and political handling of dissent and protest within the country.
