Son wants mortal remains, books of Afzal Guru returned

Srinagar, February 09, 2016 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, Ghalib, son of martyr Muhammad Afzal Guru, who recently passed his Class 10th examination with flying colours, has said that the family wants Afzal’s mortal remains handed over to it. Ghalib in a media interview at his residence in Srinagar said, “I wish the mortal remains of my father and his books are returned to our family.”

“We organize special prayer gathering every year at our home since my father was hanged and people from different walks of life visit us on this day.” “I and my mother are aware of this fact that India is not interested in returning the mortal remains of my ‘Baba’ (Afzal Guru). However, India can at least return us his belongings that includes a copy of Holy Quran, his spectacles, a radio set and books,” Ghalib said.

He said, he focuses on studies as his father wanted him to be an Islamic scholar and fulfil the wishes of his mother and excel in studies. “I am duty-bound to do so,” he said. Meanwhile, Ghalib’s mother and widow of Muhammad Afzal Guru, in an interview said, “It is our right to get the mortal remains of Afzal, and any civilized society in the world cannot support India’s refusal to do so as it is totally against humanity.

Afzal was secretly hanged in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail on February 9, 2013, in connection with the attack on Indian Parliament in 2001. His family was not informed prior to his execution and he was buried in the premises of the jail.
